Cash in Hand
South Africa’s currency is the Rand, and with favorable exchange rates for many international currencies, visitors will find South Africa a great value-for-money destination.
The Rand comes in note denominations of R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200, and coins in denominations of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2 and R5. Banking and Bureau de Change facilities can be found all over South Africa and money can generally be changed swiftly and easily. There is also a wide choice of banks and foreign exchange booths at all the airports. Banking hours from Monday to Friday are generally 9.00am to 3.30pm and 8.30am to 11am on Saturdays, but those at the airport adjust their hours to accommodate international flights. Automatic teller machines (ATMs) are found almost everywhere, from filling stations to shopping malls. Visa and Mastercards can be used to withdraw money from the ATMs, but check with your bank first before your journey. All major credit cards are widely accepted, except for the purchasing of fuel.
